On Thursday, April 12, a number of our members went to Farmingdale State College to meet with Michael Veracka, Associate Professor of Urban Horticulture & Design. Professor Veracka supervises students in maintaining the Sustainable Garden, a half acre demonstration garden which he started in 2011. Although the gardens were still in their winter drabs, we could see the layout of the vegetables and flowers that would be growing later this spring and summer, and walked through the various garden rooms in the Teaching Gardens. Along the way, the professor talked to us about sustainable gardening, how we as homeowners can encourage pollinators to our yards, and how the college is teaching successful horticultural practices. Our talk and tour ended in the greenhouse that keeps many of the tropical plants and seedlings protected during the winter months. Having seen the “before”, we all agreed we will have to return to the gardens in coming months to see the “after”.
The Plant Sale at Farmingdale College will be on May 8th – 10th, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Horticulture Greenhouses. North Entrance off Route 110.
